Earthquake in southern Tibet
Earthquake of magnitude 7.8 hit at 34 km ESE of Lamjung, Nepal according to U.S. Geological survey was felt in neighbouring regions of Tibet. According to Xinhua news, the earthquake also hit hardest in Kyirong and Nyelam counties in Shigatse City. Houses were demolished in Kyirong, and communications signals were lost in Kyirong, Nyalam, Shigatse and Dram region in the China-Nepal border.
Over 20 death toll was confirmed and about 54 temples sustained damages in Shigatse (Xigatse).
"The earthfquake demolished almost 95% of houses in kyirong (gyirong) naeshar and killed some of the localities. Many are staying without home and some in tents. Entire place looks empty plain with collapsed and wrecked houses. We heard few people lost their life and natives were helping the demised people's family. This year was indeed a dark history of our region. Since the starting of this new year, there was heavy snowfall and took life of around seven children" said by a local person via phone.
His Holiness the XIV Dalai Lama and his holiness the XVII Karmapa were saddened and paid condolences to the victims of earthquake. Central Tibetan Administration (CTA) expressed expresses shock; donates NPR 20 Lacs towards relief in Nepal Earthquake. Sikyong Dr. Lobsang Sangay, the political leader of the Tibetan people, said, “At this dark and painful time, words fail to convey how deeply we feel for the people affected in Nepal, Tibet and India”
“On behalf of the Central Tibetan Administration and the entire Tibetan people, I express my profound sympathies and condolences to those who have lost their loved ones and whose lives have been severely devastated by this horrific natural calamity.”
“Our sincere prayers are with the people affected by the earthquake and the governments at this time of national tragedy,” he said.
